McCallum Orchestra students will be performing in a fundraising concert on Sunday, March 23rd, 7:00pm, with The Eggmen, a fantastic Beatles tribute band. This is one of only two fundraisers for the orchestra this year. Fundraisers in the past have helped send students to NYC/Lincoln Center (last summer) and are helping Mac kids travel to LSU and New Orleans this spring. The opportunity to perform in a variety of venues with both peers and professional musicians across a range of genres is what makes McCallum Fine Arts Academy such a unique educational experience. None of this is possible without the support from our Austin neighborhoods. For ticket information ( https://mccallumeggmen.eventbrite.com )
August's Allandale Neighbor is chock full of thoughts on transition and change as we take stock of some of the activities going on across the neighborhood at summer's end. Here's a quick summary of what you'll find in the latest issue of the Allandale Neighbor. Thanks as always to our contributors and editorial team!
Have you wondered what’s “growing on” at Lamar Middle School? If so, then take some time to visit Lamar’s edible gardens. The vegetable gardens are located near the intersection of Burnet Road and Romeria, near the Band Hall. Currently, there are three fruit trees and 15 raised beds growing everything from A (for Asparagus) to Z (for Zucchini).
As you may know, the field surrounding Lamar’s track has plenty of sun to offer and also plenty of grass. But who wants to eat Bermuda grass, so why not use the empty space to grow food? In June of 2011, a group of parents and teachers installed the first four garden beds. A parent initiative grant from Texas Action for Healthy Kids provided the “seed” money for this project.

McCallum Robotics Team Fundraiser - House Number Curb Painting
The McCallum Robotics Team has qualified to attend the VEX Robotics World Championship in Anaheim California in April. In order to attend, the team is raising funds to help pay for travel expenses and equipment.
We will be painting house numbers on curbs in the Brentwood, Crestview, and Allandale neighborhoods. If you would like to have your house numbers painted on your curb using reflective paint to improve the visibility of your address for emergency purposes, deliveries, and visitors, then contact the team sponsor, Audrea Moyers, at the phone number or email address below to schedule a time. We plan to work several weekends in late January and February, so we can work with your schedule.
We suggest a $20 donation, per set of numbers. Thanks for your support for our team!
Please contact Audrea Moyers to schedule yours! We will be coming around on Saturday Jan. 26 and Sunday Feb. 10th and more if there is an overwhelming response.

Yesterday was a great day to be outdoors and a great day for a Bike Rodeo. We had a good turnout for the event. Kids who participated in the Bike Rodeo had their bikes checked, their helmets fitted, learned bike safety skills, and entered in the Slow Bike Race. Everyone who completed all stages of the rodeo received a set of front and back safety lights for their bikes. Christopher Stanton and volunteers from the Ghisallo Foundation conducted the event; they chalked out various courses on the Lamar parking lot and took the bike riders through it. It was a well-organized, fun event. Many thanks to Christopher and crew!
Sun & Ski and Nelo's Bikes were kept busy throughout the event checking out everyone's bike and making minor adjustments/fixes. Sun & Ski also kicked in two $25 gift certificates as prizes. We had a number of kids from Gullett participate as well as ones from Lamar. Neighbors dropped off bikes for the bike swap. The ones that were not taken will be given to the Boys and Girls Club East Campus for their bike repair/workshop clinic. The clinic is put on by the Ghisallo Foundation. Thanks to Laura DiCarlo for getting everyone registered at the rodeo and for bringing brownies and bannanas. Overall, the second Lamar Bike Rodeo Bike Swap, Slow Race and Fix it Event was an enjoyable community event.

Delicious food and drink will be available for purchase from multiple vendors. The event is free and open to the public, but donations to benefit the Orchestra Program are strongly encouraged. Come on out for a great time and a great cause – supporting the arts! Saturday, October 20th beginning at 6:30pm at the Mueller Lake Park Amphitheater.
Today, Lamar Middle School erected a new marquee at the southwest corner of the school fields. This was one of the notable items mentioned in the following article by PTA President, Jennifer Carson that appeared in the August issue of the Allandale Neighbor. The marquee is located amidst the small group of trees planted by Sustainable Neighborhoods a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, they were forced to uproot one of the trees to make room it.
Top Ten Things Happening at Lamar!
by Jennifer Carson, Lamar PTA president
The Lamar PTA has worked hand in hand with new principal George Llewellyn to make huge improvements to the school! More and more neighborhood students are choosing Lamar as their middle school. We received $90,000 in grants for the Fine Arts curriculum that we will be implementing this year. Of all the wonderful things happening, here are the top ten:
1. Fine Arts Academy at last!
After years of effort, the Lamar Fine Arts Academy opens this fall! Over 200 students are attending with an emphasis on the fine arts. We are keeping the same spirit as McCallum so that all our students participate in the fine arts, not just Academy students. Our partnership with the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., will expand our arts instruction into all core classes.

Friends, Neighbors, and Parents,
Hi. I'm a mom at Gullett Elementary school, of three great kids, and we at the school are getting ready for our Spring Silent Auction and Family Fun Night this April 14th, Saturday from 6-8pm.
We are so delighted to have a number of wonderful local vendors (and neighbors!) for our event this year, as well as some exciting local entertainment from The Invincible Czars. We plan to have the auction outside under our lovely new covered courts (weather permitting) with the stars and the spring breezes. There's really something for everyone and some great prizes to bid on as well from many of our community vendors and shops. The school is at 6310 Treadwell Blvd.
I am hopeful some of you will join us, even if your kids are grown, you want to check us out for your future student or you just plain want to support your local school. Please don't feel intimidated or like you'd be intruding, we are all family at Gullett and we'd love having all our neighbors and friends around for community building and fun! Please buy your tickets in advance to RSVP for food at http://www.gullettgeckos.com/want-to-help/silent-auction/. For your $20 you'll get a great dinner, dessert, first class entertainment, the chance to bid on some wonderful prizes and plenty of Allandale home-spun fun. It doesn't get much better than that!
We look forward to seeing you there!
